Yes, sometimes it does.  Obviously if you are going to do something that requires construction, remodeling or the addition of physical objects, you’re going to have to pull your wallet out of your pocket.  You know what they say, “It takes money to make money.”

Are there things I can do that don’t cost anything?
YES!  The good news is, there are plenty of things you can do that require very little to no money, just planning, cooperation and implementation.  Many of them involve no more than rethinking how you and your staff interact with people, reconsidering the flow of your sales process, injecting appropriate Sales Choreography, choosing more appropriate words to create the effect you want.  There is a lot you can do without a major capital outlay.

What you DON’T want to do is NOTHING
What you DON’T want to do is CUT BACK on things that matter
What you DON’T want to do is reduce the quality of whatever it is you are doing now

How to Lose a Customer 101
In a recent newsletter I received (written by Dan Kennedy) called the No BS Marketing to the Affluent Newsletter,  there’s a great story on page two about a colleague’s recent Experience with her favorite restaurant, one she patronizes regularly and always orders more than she knows she’ll eat because she likes to take it home so she doesn’t have to cook.  

On her last visit, she discovers that they no longer provide take-home containers, ostensibly because they are “going green”, but more likely because they are cutting back on expenses.  And what was her reaction to that?

As Dan puts it, “They will no longer see any of her green.” 

So don’t cut back just for the sake of saving money.  Eliminating or reducing services that add value to what you do or sell, particularly ones that customers like and have become accustomed to, will end up costing you more that what you’re saving on paper.  And let’s not even think about the negative word-of-mouth

And as for doing nothing?   Need I remind you why you are now a stockholder in General Motors? 

Here you have a bunch of dim wits who just kept blithely going on doing everything they’d always been doing, even though it wasn’t producing the results it used to.  But they did nothing, figuring that it would all work out in the end. 

Well it did work out for them because the government bailed them out, but no one is going to bail YOU out.  You’re going to go down the tubes just like thousands of other businesses have over the past two years.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY

YOU CAN improve the Experience people have with your business, and it’s going to be easier than you may think

THERE IS A WAY for you to create an Experience that is going to impress your customers, clients or patients so much that they won’t even consider doing business with anyone else.

IN SIX MONTHS, your business is going to be a lot healthier than it is today because you are going to be giving your customers the kind of Experience they cannot get from anyone else.  An Experience they like so much that it feels good to them to patronize YOU.

I was in the catering business for many years and doing very well.  I never needed to advertise because all my business came from referrals and word of mouth.  All of a sudden in the mid ‘90’s, there were hundreds of people who decided they wanted to get into the catering business too.  And in order to get clients, they were charging ridiculously low prices and stealing business away from all of us who were established and had built up a steady clientele.  New York may be a large city but it is a small town and most of us knew each other, so word got around pretty quickly when someone lost a big client or even worse, went out of business. 

Sydney lived down the hall from me and I knew who she was and what she was doing long before the rest of the world found out on the front page of every newspaper in town.  Since then, she had built up a very successful speaking and consulting business, but I was never really sure what it was she spoke or consulted about.

Then one day, after hearing about a long-time colleague who lost his biggest client to someone who had low-balled him, I told Sydney all about the changes that were going on in the catering world and how nervous I was that I might lose a big chunk of my business too.  She started to ask me all kinds of questions about how I ran my business, what I offered and what my competition was offering.  At the time a lot of her questions didn’t make sense and I couldn’t figure out what she was getting at, and I’m thinking to myself, “This girl sure is getting nosey!”

After about an hour of this, she tells me that the secret isn’t lowering my prices, the secret is being so different from the competition that clients would be comparing apples to oranges when deciding between me and someone else.  She even told me I would be able to get away with charging more than I already did, which I did not believe at all at first.

I had done some dinners and parties for her over the years and she always insisted on paying me the same price I charged everyone else, so I asked her if I could hire her to work with me for her usual fee, and she agreed.  She was relentless, no detail was too small.  She wanted to know everything, like the kinds of serving pieces we used, the exact words we used to describe the food, what the proposals looked like and the way we priced everything, where we got the waiters and how old were they – I couldn’t believe how many things she thought it was important to know about.

When she presented her evaluation and recommendations it blew me away.  She knew absolutely nothing about this business, but when I read her suggestions, I knew immediately that if I did even half of what she had written, that my business was going to skyrocket.  Nobody else in New York was doing anything like this!  

The first thing she suggested was to expand my focus and become an Event Designer.   Give clients not just food, but create an Event, or as Sydney calls it, an Experience for them and their guests.  I was so excited that I hardly slept that night and couldn’t wait to get started.  Sydney’s advice was going to make me a beautiful big, red, shiny apple in a sea of oranges!

There ended up being one major problem.  Now I knew what to do, but not necessarily how to do it.  So I asked if she could help me get it done too.  She made what she called an Action Plan and worked with me to figure out which items were the most important and which were the easiest or cost little to no money.  We did those first. 

I was a little nervous after I sent out the first “new” proposal, which was higher than my clients were used to.  I knew they were getting great value for the money, it but was the client going to buy into it?  Yes, she did, and called me personally the day after the party to say how thrilled she was at all the compliments she had received from the guests.  I got three new clients from that party.

But this was just the beginning.  Every party I did from then on got me more clients and rave notes and phone calls from the hostess or the event chair.  I tripled my business for the holiday season that year!  And the best thing was, not only was I making a lot more money, I was having a lot more fun too!

Now I’m comfortably retired and could have sold the business but chose not to because I couldn’t find anyone I felt would live up to my standards.  There wouldn’t even have been any offers if it was the same business I had before working with Sydney.

I heard of Sydney through a networking friend who loaned me her XXX-Rated Sales Strategies program.  It blew me away how detail oriented she was and how she thought of so many different strategies and ideas for that business!  I figured if she could do that for an escort service, she could definitely do it for an office staffing business.
